The RSPB are looking to house owners to help vulnerable birds and wildlife around their homes and gardens across the UK.
The
RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch has shown how important gardens are for birds during the winter. Building on this, the organisation is piloting a new online project 'Homes Fit For Birds' to help you help birds like house sparrows (
Passer domesticus), starlings (
Sturnus vulgaris), song thrushes (
Turdus philomelos), spotted flycatchers (
Muscicapa striata), house martins (
Delichon urbica) and swifts (
Apus apus). All six are declining and have important populations in cities, towns and villages. The things you can do for them around your home could make a real difference to their conservation.
To take part you need to register by Monday 8 May 2006 using from the
Homes Fit For Birds website. By entering some detail about your home and garden, you will get tailored advice to help these birds. Later in the year, you will be asked to complete a simple online questionnaire to report what wildlife you have seen around your home and garden during the summer and, what actions you have taken or plan to take for wildlife.
